New designer takes a wax lyrical twist on Tableware
A design student has taken the idea of condensable, custom made tableware to its literal translation, by designing a range of wax-made tableware.
The 'Meltware' range by Maaike Seeger allows you to create extra plates and cups with wax moulds for a particular occasion, which can then be melted down again to re use into whatever you want.
Despite its practical implications (i.e.: easy breakage and not withstanding high temperatures) the set does provide a novel solution to creating more dining accessories for say, impromptu guests whilst also not losing valuable cupboard space.
The collection is made using Carnauba wax, a super-hard, waterproof wax that comes from palm trees. When the need for extra dishes arises, the theory is you just melt the wax in a pan, pour into the moulds and as soon as it's cooled you have extra tableware at hand.
Whilst it may be no real threat to the ceramics industry, the quirky and novel design range does provide a fun and contemporary twist on a practical dilemma, saving valuable cupboard space with unused tableware and proving a great talking point for any dinner occasion.
