Arita Ceramics Symposium announced

The world’s first symposium on tableware, scheduled to take place November 16-17 in Japan, will gather leading voices from the global centres of ceramics, including Arita, Sèvres and Stoke on Trent

The stage is set for the world’s first symposium on tableware, due to take place November 16-17 in one of the global centres of ceramics in Arita, Japan.

The Arita Ceramics Symposium will gather leading voices from the global centres of ceramics, including from Arita, Sèvres and Stoke on Trent, who will offer their views and thoughts on the future of ceramics.

The symposium takes a multidisciplinary, innovative approach to tableware, asking what can creativity, leisure, sustainability, and technology do for tableware?

Fierce price competition and changing lifestyles have decimated the ceramics industry in many areas, but there are signs of recovery.

Key decision makers from the industry, regional leaders, designers, as well as leisure and culture professionals will discuss how to prepare for the future.

Keynote speakers and thematic session leaders include global trend forecaster and Science of the Time founder Prof Dr Carl Rohde, Royal Crown Derby's chairman Kevin Oakes, Sèvres’ general director Romane Sarfati, and Kyushu Ceramic Museum director Yukio Suzuta.

Ranti Tjan, director of the European Ceramic Work Centre and co-organiser of the symposium says: “We are very pleased to announce this preliminary line-up. These experts are only the first to present new perspectives on ceramics.”

Arita, surrounded by great scenic beauty, is the place of origin of Japanese porcelain and home to the many, world-famous producers of Arita ware. The symposium will take place at the Saga Ceramics Research Laboratory in Arita.

The symposium is organised by Arita Episode 2 in close collaboration with the Saga Ceramics Research Laboratory and the European Ceramic Work Centre, EKWC in the Netherlands.

There is only room for a selected group of 40 participants.

Early bird tickets are available until the first of August. Register here
