Finnish design centre to open

Finnish design brands Iittala and Arabia to debut a design centre in Helsinki this autumn

Finnish lifestyle brands Iittala and Arabia will launch a design centre in Helsinki this autumn. The centre will present a deep dive into the heritage of the brands as well as examining their cutting edge design expertise, looking not only at today’s but also at tomorrow’s design.

The Arabia Centre in Helsinki has for years been a key destination in Helsinki for design buffs, and especially those visiting from Asia. The Iittala outlet attracts over 200,000 design lovers each year, 25,000 of which participate in guided tours. With the opening of the new centre, the aim of Fiskars Group and its Finnish lifestyle and tabletop brands, Iittala and Arabia, is to reinforce the fine legacy of Finnish design.

“We wish to create a centre that offers interesting and interactive content for visitors. The centre will provide a window into the history, present and future of these brands, while at the same time integrating them with the surrounding community. We hope to build an attractive destination that locals can enjoy and that also provides interesting content for tourists visiting Finland in its capacity as a design powerhouse, and Helsinki as the capital of it.” says Päivi Paltola, SVP of Iittala and Arabia brands.

“We continue the close collaboration with Arabia Art Department Society, whose artists create unique ceramic pieces on the 9th floor of Arabia centre. Also our long lasting partnership with Design Museum continues, the Design Museum Arabia will in the future tell the story of our roots in both ceramics and glass”, Paltola continues. 

The current Galleria Arabia will be transformed to an event space with seminars, presentations, exhibitions and other events. 

The construction and planning programme for the centre is currently underway, with construction beginning in the summer. The centre is scheduled to open in mid-November. The Iittala Outlet Arabia store, located in the same premises, will undergo a transformation so that it also offers an engaging design and brand experience for consumers. Due to the construction work, Design Museum Arabia will be closed as of June.
