Maison Paris Designer of the Year announced

British interior designer Ilse Crawford announced as the prestigious Designer of the Year for the September 2016 of Maison & Objet, Paris

Since 2015, Maison & Objet has chosen one Designer of the Year for each show (Jan and Sept). Ilse Crawford has been announced as Designer of the Year for M&O Paris September 2016. Founding editor of Elle Decoration UK, Ilse is one of the most successful interior designers in the UK with her own multi-disciplinary practice.

As a designer, art director, curator, lecturer and author of three books, Ilse was made a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth in 2014, for her services to interior design.

All of Ilse’s projects are evocative examples of her philosophy to create environments where people feel comfortable, spaces that make sense for those who will use them.

This idea, of enhancing the human experience, Ilse applies to public spaces, private homes, products and commercial projects.

In 2008, for the first Aesop shop in London, Ilse created an intimate atmosphere, while highlighting the historical dimension of the building’s architecture with thoughtful contemporary accents; and in 2002, Ilse put the same talent to use to reveal the magic of Ett Hem, in Stockholm, where she turned an arts and crafts building into a hotel, run like a family home.

The following year, her vision turned Duddell’s, a private club in Hong Kong, into a collector’s house and in 2014 she redesigned the VitraHaus, Vitra’s flagship store and home to the Vitra Home Collection, delivering the story of a Finnish-German couple, to bring Artek and Vitra’s collections to life.

Ilse also undertook work in 2015 for the Cathay Pacific first class lounge in Hong Kong and launched a collaboration with Ikea – everyday useful pieces like lamps, accessories and furniture that celebrate the tactility of natural materials.

This year, so far, has seen Ilse unveil a family of stools in collaboration with Artifort at Salone del Mobile and complete the first Aesop shop in Copenhagen.

This September, Ilse will be named Designer of the Year and is in charge of designing the Designers’ Stuio, a work and networking space located in Hall 8.

Maison & Objet, Paris, takes place September 2-6, 2016. www.maison-objet.com/en/paris
