Iconic Wedgwood re-imagined by Lee Broom
Launching exclusively at Harrods, a capsule collection of limited-edition vases and bowls are the result of a partnership between iconic luxury British brand Wedgwood and leading product designer Lee Broom
Wedgwood, the iconic British luxury brand, partners with one of UK's leading product designers Lee Broom to create a capsule collection of limited-edition vases and bowls, inspired by its 250-year design heritage. The collection will launch exclusively at Harrods this April to be included in their Art Partners celebration.
The Wedgwood Limited Edition by Lee Broom is a true showcase of craftsmanship and design Made in Britain.
Founded in 1759 by Josiah Wedgwood, this collaboration celebrates the values of design, British craftsmanship and innovation by using the famous Jasperware, taking cues from iconic historical pieces. Broom looked to the Wedgwood archive and archetypal designs to produce thoroughly cutting-edge versions of timeless classics.
Being respectful to the classic and iconic Jasperware designs which he grew up with, Broom has taken several classic Wedgwood silhouettes from different periods and stripped back their ornate details to create a collection of strikingly modern designs.
Attracted initially to the timeless black and white stripes of the Panther Vase for its sense of modernity, Broom used this as a starting point for the collection, combining the graphic stripe with postmodern elements, introducing vibrant colours and glossy lacquered textures which starkly juxtapose the very matte finish of the traditional Jasperware.
First introduced in the late eighteenth century, the Panther Vase is a stunning piece of art, named due to the powerfully modelled handles rising from the shoulders of this elegant piece. In the form of panther heads, the handles terminate in bacchanalian masks. The panther was one of several animals associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and 'inspired madness', and was a popular symbol often represented in the neo-classical style.
The vase is handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional techniques, and modelled in Jasper, the most famous of Josiah's inventions dating from 1774, and the result of tireless experiments and trials to produce unglazed fine stoneware in a variety of colours. Other iconic pieces that formed the source of inspiration for Lee include the Acorn Vase, The Mythological Beast vase, and the unique profile of the 1202 Vase.
Broom's designs are a beautiful nod to the past, being handcrafted using Wedgwood's traditional techniques of throwing, engine turning and ornamentation applied in the Wedgwood factory in Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent, UK today.
Dik Delaney, Wedgwood Design Director: "It has been wonderful to work with Lee through the journey of reimagining iconic classic Wedgwood designs including the Panther Vase, and to see how he has been inspired by and honoured the unique materials, shapes and techniques invented by Josiah Wedgwood and still used today in our factory. Lee's bold approach to colour and materials has created a really exciting capsule collection that we are sure will resonate with British design lovers and collectors."
Lee Broom comments on the partnership: "I am delighted to be working with Wedgwood whose craftsmanship, innovation and heritage is so well aligned with everything we represent as a British design brand. It has been a fascinating process delving in to the Wedgwood archives and their rich history to find inspiration to reimagine their iconic Jasperware designs and create a collection I hope will become collector's items of the future."
The Wedgwood Lee Broom collection iis available exclusively at Harrods, London in numbers of 15 per piece, as part of the launch of Harrods' Art Partners initiative in April 2017.
